The submissions keep rolling in tonight (Sat., Nov. 17, 2018) at UFC Fight Night 140 live on FOX Sports 1 from inside Parque Roca Arena in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as women’s strawweight contender Cynthia Calvillo returned from her suspension to choke out Poliana Botelho with seconds left in the first round.
Calvillo didn’t really want to stand with a talented striker like Botelho so she was happy to bring the action to the ground late into the first after catching a kick and dumping Botelho on the canvas. Calvillo wasted no time working to Botelho’s back and sinking in a rear-naked choke in impressive fashion. It was quite incredible, especially considering the condition Calvillo was in during her failed weight cut.

With this performance, Calvillo shakes off a one year absence since losing to Carla Esparza at UFC 219 and finishes one of the best up-and-comers the 115-pound division has to offer. Calvillo’s training at Team Alpha Male has provided her the tools to become an absolute beast on the ground and really showed tonight against a dangerous fighter. The 31-year-old contender is going to have to win a few more to challenge for a UFC title, but this win just set it all in motion.
