What promised to be an all-action slugfest went down tonight (Saturday, November 10, 2018) between “Platinum” Mike Perry and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, from the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, live and free on Fox Sports 1. Mike Perry had bounced back from a two-fight skid by narrowly defeating Paul Felder (who was on commentary tonight) by split decision. Cowboy Cerrone had lost a unanimous decision to Leon Edwards in his last fight, and was 1-3 in his last four.
Perry swung big and Cerrone ducked under into the clinch. Perry landed a couple hard body knees. Cerrone returned the favor. They separated. Cerrone landed an inside leg kick, then a jab. Perry slipped the next jab. Perry stepped in with a lead uppercut that just missed. Cerrone ducked a rush, but couldn’t land the takedown. They fought for position in the clinch before Cowboy broke off with a knee. Perry slipped another jab. Perry surprised Cerrone and took him down with a bodylock, straight into side control! Cerrone rolled and reversed the position! Perry turtled and Cerrone stepped over, looking for his back. He slipped off and Perry was on top again! Cerrone looked for a triangle, then an armbar! Perry picked Cerrone up and slammed him, but Cowboy held on! He went belly-down, and with 14 seconds left, Perry had to tap!
Cerrone brought his denim-clad, boot-wearing baby into the cage and held him up like Mufasa. He showed the camera his baby’s massive belt buckle. Cerrone understands his brand very well. In the post-fight interview, he celebrated breaking both the UFC win record and the UFC finish record. He also said he is heading back to the lightweight division:
“I don’t care who, I just wanna know when! You’re damn right, I’m coming after that belt, Khabib, I’m coming. Cowboy is back!”
Official result: Donald Cerrone def. Mike Perry via submission (armbar) at 4:46 of Round 1
