Joseph Benavidez was expecting to fight Ray Borg later tonight (Sat., Nov. 10, 2018) at UFC Fight Night 139 live on FOX Sports 1 from inside Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, medical issues ultimately knocked “Tazmexican Devil” out of competition.
Instead, Benavidez will now extend his camp another few weeks and meet streaking flyweight prospect Alex Perez at TUF 28 Finale on Nov. 30 from inside Pearl Theatre at The Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada, per a recent report by MMAjunkie.
Benavidez, 34, is coming off a split-decision loss to fellow flyweight contender Sergio Pettis. Before that, Benavidez had racked off six-straight victories inside of the Octagon, including a decision win over current UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo back in 2016. The former Team Alpha Male veteran will try to get back into the win column in what could be his last fight at 125 pounds.
Perez, 26, has won his last eight fights, including three UFC appearances and a quick stint on “Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series.” The talented wrestler is taking a huge step up in competition against Benavidez, but it’s a matchup he simply couldn’t refuse. A victory over Benavidez would not only push Perez to 4-0 in UFC but it would give him the win he needs to enter contender status.
TUF 28 Finale will be headlined by a welterweight collision between former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos and surging contender Kamaru Usman.
