Fight fans got more than they bargained for earlier tonight (Fri., Oct. 5, 2018) during UFC 229’s ceremonial weigh ins (video replay here) when heavyweight knockout artists Derrick Lewis and Alexander Volkov squared off in an intense staredown (shown above).
The two hulking fighters came to nose-to-nose before “Black Beast” decided to flick Volkov’s hat right off of his head. Volkov, who wasn’t backing down to Lewis in front of thousands of screaming fans, quickly pushed his heavyweight counterpart back and reached forward in a punching motion.
The two fighters eventually settled down after UFC president Dana White and company played peacemaker.
While most combat fans are going to tune in to UFC 229 tomorrow night live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, to see Conor McGregor return to the Octagon in a grudge match against undefeated lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, Lewis and Volkov did more than enough during their staredown to spark a little extra interest at the bottom of the PPV main card.
It’s exactly the type of ferocity and intensity you want to see from two heavyweights jockeying for a title shot on what is shaping out to be the biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) card of all time.
MMAmania.com will deliver LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the entire UFC 229 fight card on fight night (click here), starting with the Fight Pass “Prelims” matches online, which are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. ET, then the remaining undercard balance on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET, before the PPV main card start time at 10 p.m. ET.
