Former ONE Championship welterweight champion Ben Askren, who also held gold for Bellator MMA under the “Bjork Rebney” era, wants to know when Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is going to make an official announcement.
After all, “Funky” is expected to fight a Top 5 welterweight in his Octagon debut and the fighter he was traded for, Demetrious Johnson, has already been announced as a ONE Championship athlete via global conference call.
“Hey UFC are you gonna make an announcement? You are like that guy with a girlfriend who’s embarrassed to tell his buddies even when everyone knows,” Askren wrote on social media. “Ha ha ha you know you love me.”
Askren spent the better part of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career mired in a pissing contest with promotion president Dana White (samples here and here), so it will be interesting to see how these two get along when it comes time to book fights.
While “Funky” has been calling for a Georges St-Pierre bout, “Rush” seems wholly uninterested because nobody in combat sports ever heard of Askren. In addition, that Khabib Nurmagomedov showdown at 165 pounds sounds like a pipe dream.
Maybe UFC is saving its big announcement for this Saturday’s pay-per-view (PPV) event?
