Derrick Lewis is going to have his work cut out for him next weekend at UFC 230 in New York City, as “Black Beast” takes on Daniel Cormier for the UFC heavyweight championship.
It’s massive opportunity for Lewis, who is coming off a come-from-behind knockout finish over Alexander Volkov at UFC 229, but one that he will enter as a massive underdog.
In order to prepare himself for the high motor and relentless pressure of Cormier, who captured the UFC heavyweight title with a knockout win over Stipe Miocic this past July, “Blast Beast” is making all the necessary adjustments in his training, as well as his sex life.
“I’ve been doing nothing but cardio. Even the sex,” Lewis said during a recent interview on The Rich Eisen Show (transcript via MMA Fighting). “The sex really been helping my hips. I know Cormier is a wrestler so you really got to get them hips down on him so I’ve been working them hips really good.”
Lewis has boasted out some pretty hilarious thoughts in the past, including his hot-balls interview following his UFC 229 win, but this one ranks up there with the best of them. While “Black Beast’s” sex training isn’t going to be enough to close the gap with Cormier in the wrestling department, at least the knockout artist is trying to improve his imperfections.
Despite compiling a 9-1 record over his last 10 appearances, including victories over Volkov, Francis Ngannou, Travis Browne, Roy Nelson, and Marcin Tybura, many fight fans believe that Lewis doesn’t deserve a shot at the UFC heavyweight title. Cormier has been quick to dismiss that backlash, but that doesn’t change the fact that Lewis still has to prove himself next weekend in NYC.
“Of course they would say that [I don’t deserve it], I guess just because my fighting style. Everyone else is a mixed martial artist,” he said. “I’m not a mixed martial artist, I’m a brawler. Basically, I guess they just thinking I’ve been winning my fights just by luck. I just think I’ve been winning my fights on heart.”
Lewis will square off with Cormier at UFC 230 on Nov. 3 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Madison Square Garden in New York City and try to pull off one of the biggest upsets in UFC heavyweight title history.
