It’s off to the Great White North for the world’s largest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion as Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heads to Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, for UFC Fight Night 138. In the main event, top Light Heavyweight finishers Volkan Oezdemir and Anthony Smith duke it out, while Artem Lobov faces late replacement Michael Johnson in the co-feature. The FOX Sports 1-televised main card will also feature another pair of Light Heavyweight showdowns in Misha Cirkunov vs. Pat Cummins and Gian Villante vs. Ed Herman.
This may not have the smorgasbord of prop bets UFC 229 did, but there are still some bargains if you know where to look. Let’s dig in!
What Went Wrong at UFC 229?
Lina Lansberg proved far less successful in the clinch than I expected her to be against Yana Kunitskaya, but dominant performances from Jussier Formiga and Khabib Nurmagomedov — alongside another miracle from Derrick Lewis (watch it) — turned UFC 229 into the most profitable night of the year. Let’s see if we can’t build off of that.
UFC Fight Night 138 Odds For The Undercard:
Sean Strickland (-115) vs. Nordine Taleb (-105)
Nasrat Haqparast (-850) vs. Thibault Gouti (+575)
Calvin Kattar (-275) vs. Chris Fishgold (+235)
Sarah Moras (-200) vs. Talita Bernardo (+170)
Te Edwards (-475) vs. Don Madge (+380)
Arjan Bhullar (-210) vs. Marcelo Golm (+175)
Stevie Ray (-165) vs. Jessin Ayari (+145)
Thoughts: Honestly, the only value I see here is in Stevie Ray, who seems fairly undervalued. Jessin Ayari has had two fights in UFC and, though he’s technically 1-1, the vast majority of MMA media had him losing to Jim Wallhead in his debut. On top of that, he’s been out of action for 1.5 years and is making his first appearance at a new weight class. Even on the heels of two consecutive losses, Ray should handle him without much issue.
UFC Fight Night 138 Odds For The Main Card:
Volkan Oezdemir (190) vs. Anthony Smith (+165)
Michael Johnson (-600) vs. Artem Lobov (-600)
Misha Cirkunov (-450) vs. Patrick Cummins (+360)
Andre Soukhamthath (-220) vs. Jonathan Martinez (+180)
Gian Villante (-250) vs. Ed Herman (+210)
Alex Garcia (-185) vs. Court McGee (+160)
Thoughts: I’ve got a good feeling about Anthony Smith’s chances and a decent feeling about Court McGee’s.
I keep picking against Volkan Oezdemir and I keep looking stupid, but if I was worried about looking stupid, I wouldn’t be doing this job. Smith is the more versatile striker of the two and, unlike Oezdemir, has some slick submissions to back it up. In addition, Oezdemir has looked iffy both times he’s gone past the first round in UFC, while Smith’s motor has yet to falter. Therefore, a bit on the underdog makes sense. On a similar note, while McGee is badly outgunned in terms is strength and punching power, Alex Garcia is notorious for floundering in deep waters. Don’t bet big, as “Crusher’s” fights tend to come down to the wire, but he seems like a decent investment.
UFC Fight Night 138 Best Bets:
- Single bet -- Stevie Ray: $82.50 to make $50
- Single bet -- Anthony Smith: $40 to make $66
- Single bet -- Court McGee: $25 to make $41.25
I can’t guarantee much from this event, but it should be memorable, if nothing else. See you Saturday, Maniacs.
