After dismantling Conor McGregor with relative ease earlier this month at UFC 229, undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was immediately thrust into superfight talks with undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Khabib first challenged Mayweather then Mayweather quickly accepted, telling the Russian UFC star to “get the check book.” Betting odds were compiled, predictions were made, and the combat community had another potential crossover fight to run into the ground reminiscent of Mayweather vs. McGregor.
While this fight has been fun to talk about over the past couple of weeks, UFC president Dana White is here to quickly shut it down. According to White, anything you’ve heard about a Mayweather Vs. Khabib clash is completely untrue.
“Don’t pay attention to it,” White told ESPN. “First of all, the Mayweather team has not approached us at all. Khabib is under contract with the UFC. Floyd is very good about getting his name out there when he wants to.”
We’ve heard this tune from White before, but he’s likely telling the truth on this one. Khabib just wrapped up his title fight with McGregor at UFC 229 and is currently scheduled to go before the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) early next week to find out what sort of punishment he’ll get for his post-fight brawl at UFC 229.
Still, Khabib’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, recently told ESPN that he believes that a fight could come together between “Eagle” and Mayweather. In fact, Abdelaziz thinks Khabib’s size and durable chin would give “Money” a run for his money.
“I’m talking to everybody right now,” Abdelaziz said. “At the end of the day, Khabib is a UFC fighter. He has a contract with the UFC, and we respect the contract. ... But we’re open, if Floyd wants to box Khabib.
”You have a guy who is 50-0, a guy who is 27-0. Both have never tasted defeat. Khabib brings 2.5 billion Muslims around the world, some of the richest countries in the world, and they’re behind him. Floyd Mayweather is a megastar. Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. If the two forces clash, that’s a real fight.”
For now, fight fans will have to take White’s word on this and dismiss the rumors. But once something real is brought to the table and the numbers are ran, maybe UFC will let Khabib cross over like “Notorious” did.
Of course, UFC has to be careful. Because if Khabib starts losing inside of the boxing ring he may try to wrestle Mayweather.
