At last week’s UFC 229 press conference inside Radio City Music Hall in New York City, Conor McGregor waltzed in with both of his championship belts (see it), despite the fact he was stripped of the featherweight and lightweight crowns for failing to defend either one of them.
Prior to the first-ever face off between Khabib Nurmagomedov and McGregor (see it here), Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White called for someone to bring both of Conor’s belts for the photo ops.
It didn’t sit too well with “The Eagle.”
During a recent interview on the Ariel Helwani MMA Show, Khabib expressed his disgust upon hearing the company president acknowledge Conor’s belts, saying the head honcho needs to stop kissing his biggest star’s ass.
“Dana needs to stop to kissing his ass. That’s what Dana needs. That’s it. How Dana can say, ‘Hey, where is Conor belts?’ He don’t know what happened the last two years?” he asked.
“How many times has Max Holloway defend his titles? He forget that in two years you don’t fight UFC is going to strip your belt and UFC lightweight division has to move, did Dana forget this? UFC has a lightweight champion, now we’re talking where are Conor’s belts? He loses it. He lose his mind, not only belts.”
When asked if he felt if UFC was secretly rooting for the mouthy Irishman to reclaim his strap on October 6, Khabib says there is no doubt about it.
“Of course they want him to win. But with me, I feel UFC is happy too, because I have big name, too. But right now, I don’t know about all the people in UFC, but, some people want him to win because he has big name and they can make a lot of money,” he added.
“Why do they want someone to come to the mountain and crush his face? They don’t need this. They need him to keep giving UFC big pay-per-view money. I’m okay by this, I don’t feel nothing. More important for me is October 6 when cage closes.”
McGregor’s star power is undeniable, but it’s safe to say the company can make even more money off him if he is headlining fights as a champion.
