An Update

From my Facebook:

"Hey all, wanted to give an update on my next fight and such. A little bit after my first pro fight in March, I lost hearing in one ear. Eventually found out six days before the second fight in July that I have a benign (non-cancerous) tumor in my inner ear. It's called an acoustic neuroma, a rare growth that has nothing to do with getting punched in the face for a living. After a few months of waiting on appointments/insurance, I've met with my doctors in the last week and will have it surgically removed on November 26th. The procedure is neurosurgery, so the recovery is lengthy. Haven't really talked about this with many people because I try not to complain, but I also want to keep everyone in the loop.

In the almost nine years since I started jiu-jitsu, I've never spent more than a week off the mats for any reason. I'm hoping to use the three months or so I'm not allowed to grapple/spar to heal up minor injuries, improve some mobility issues, and generally come back in better shape than before. With a little luck, I'll also blow some money on a new tattoo or travel somewhere. There's definitely some risk and uncertainty with all this, but I'm honestly not that worried about anything, more impatient to get this done and move forward."

So if you've been wondering why I haven't been able to give a good estimate on when my next fight is, this is the reason.

Unrelated note: I might roll down to San Diego next week with a buddy to compete in a grip strength competition, so if any SoCal Maniacs feel like putting us up for a night or two, let me know!
