Sergei Kharitonov followed up on his wrecking of Roy Nelson in the co-main event of Bellator 207 by getting into a car wreck on the way to Bellator 208. Kharitonov is okay following the accident, which was captured in video form as he live streamed a Q&A with fans over social media.
“We were on our way to the Bellator tournament and got in a car crash,” he wrote afterward. “We’re OK, only got some bumps and bruises.”

While it’s unclear from watching the clip, Kharitonov assured followers in the comments that he was the passenger, not driving and doing social media at the same time. He blamed ‘drunken thugs’ for crashing into his vehicle without going into further detail.
Kharitonov knocked out Roy Nelson at 4:59 of round one on Friday night (watch the highlights here), putting the durable Nelson down with a series of violent uppercuts and knees. The win puts him at 5-1-1 since Bellator started booking him in 2016, with all five victories coming via first round finish.
It’s a bit of a shame Kharitonov wasn’t involved in Bellator’s Heavyweight Grand Prix, which featured more than a few puffed up fighters from lower weight classes. Middleweight Chael Sonnen was just defeated on Saturday at Bellator 208 by Fedor Emelianenko (watch the finish here), who will move on to face Bellator light heavyweight champ Ryan Bader in the finals on January 26th.
Bellator 208 also saw heavyweight Cheick Kongo extend his winning streak to 7 with a TKO of Tim Johnson just 1:08 into their fight (watch the highlights here). A battle between Kongo and Kharitonov would be an excellent way to set up the first challenger for the winner of the Heavyweight Grand Prix. It’d certainly be a clear message that whoever holds the Bellator heavyweight belt isn’t going to have an easy time moving forward.
