After an incredible come-from-behind victory over Alexander Volkov at UFC 229 last weekend in Las Vegas (watch it), No. 2-ranked heavyweight contender Derrick Lewis was rewarded with a 265-pound title shot against Daniel Cormier in the UFC 230 main event.
But some mixed martial arts (MMA) fans believe former heavyweight kingpin, Stipe Miocic, was more deserving of the pay-per-view (PPV) headliner, scheduled for Sat., Nov. 3, 2018 inside Madison Square Garden in New York City.
“I don’t know why they don’t want to give it to Stipe, I really believe Stipe deserved the shot,” Lewis told TMZ. “He was the champion for awhile, he defended it that many times, he was dominant for awhile. I don’t know why they gave it to me before they gave it to Stipe because when everyone else lost their belts, they gave them a shot to win it back.”
Salty Stipe insists he campaigned for UFC 230, but never got the call.
The promotion can argue Miocic was stopped in the first round and that his UFC 226 loss to Cormier was fairly one-sided. That said, it’s hard to overlook the fact that promotion president Dana White has accused Miocic of not being a needle-mover and their relationship remains strained, despite this love letter.
Lewis (21-5, 1 NC) is perhaps more marketable with his entertaining fight promos (like this one) and is one of the premiere knockout artists at 265 pounds. Sure, he’s laid a few eggs from time-to-time, but hey, don't forget about that Instagram account!
