Justin Gaethje previously expressed his desire to silence “loudmouths” Dustin Poirier and Kevin Lee in his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) comeback fight. But during a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, “Highlight” revealed the backstory behind his disdain for “The Motown Phenom.”
“We will see, but I want to beat up Kevin Lee. That’s who I really want to beat up. I just like punching loudmouths in the face,” he said. “First and only time I met I was nice, then he started talking shit that I was fanboying over him. He doesn’t understand what showing people respect is. I will never show him respect again that’s for sure.”
The meeting took place earlier this year during the UFC’s Summer Kickoff press conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, which saw Lee sock Michael Chiesa after a mom joke didn’t go over so well.
According to Gaethje, however, he didn’t know a whole lot about Kevin, he was just showing respect to a guy he thought was a movie star.
“I had no idea who he was. He looked like a kung fu star. I thought he was a movie star,” joked Gaethje.
Both combatants are coming off losses, as Gaethje was last seen getting knocked out by Eddie Alvarez at UFC 218 in a thrilling Lightweight bout (see it again here). As for Lee, he came up short in his bid to capture the interim 155-pound title after getting choked out by Tony Ferguson at UFC 216 (recap).
