Less than two days from the fight, Ray Borg has been judged unfit to fight by the UFC doctors, thanks to a “viral illness” that has been plaguing him all week.
This means that Demetrious Johnson will be unable to break Anderson Silva’s record this weekend; it also means Borg has withdrawn or missed weight in the UFC five times.
However, his illness was not injury realted, according to his nutritionist.
“It wasn't weight related,” Borg’s nutritionist Dr. Michelle Ingels of Perfecting Athletes told MMA Fighting. “Ray has been getting progressively more sick each day this week and still wanted to fight so badly that he put on a game face and went to all of his fight week obligations.
“However, prior to beginning the bulk of his weight cut the UFC doctor examined Borg and concluded that he was too ill to fight this week and needed time to rest and get better.”
This is a very unfortunate situation for pound-for-pound great, Demetrious Johnson. Ironically, he was just embroiled in a controversy with the UFC in which he insisted on fighting Ray Borg over TJ Dillashaw for the express reason that Borg was the true flyweight and thus ostensibly the safer bet to allow DJ to break the all-time title defense record.
Refunds for UFC 215 have been made available (details).
