Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson is preparing to make history when he collides with Ray Borg at the upcoming UFC 216 pay-per-view (PPV) event on Oct. 7, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
And Cody Garbrandt may be preparing to stop him.
That’s according to Team Alpha Male (TAM) coach Justin Buchholz, who believes Garbrandt can drop down to 125 pounds for a champion vs. champion “super fight.” Not just for the flyweight strap, but to keep Anderson Silva’s title defense record intact.
From his conversation with Five Rounds (via MMA Fighting):
“For sure, [Demetrious Johnson] is a fight that we would love to have but we’ll just see about getting his body down to 125. I’m confident that can happen. Cody can make that weight and keep his power and put the weight back on and go back to ‘35 at this point in his career, while he’s young. Just to do it because it’s a gangster move. At that point he’d be breaking Anderson Silva’s record so it would be for the people of Brazil. We’ll keep that record intact.”
Pretty sure this guy tried that already, to no avail.
Garbrandt won’t be going anywhere for the time being, as he’s yet to settle his score with former TAM teammate TJ Dillashaw. “No Love” will defend his 135-pound title against the former champion at the upcoming UFC 217 PPV this November in New York.
After that, it’s anyone’s guess.
