It wasn’t exactly Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez-type controversy, but last night’s (Sat., Sept. 23, 2017) Bellator 183 main event between Patricky Freire and Benson Henderson with a tad bit of drama once the scorecards were read.
After a back-and-forth three-round scrap, we see (courtesy of MMA Fighting) that the cage-side judges awarded Freire a split-decision win with two scores of 29-28, with one judge giving it to Benson with the same mark.
Of course, Benson’s bewildered face once the winner was announced showed that “Smooth” obviously didn’t agree with the decision. Nevertheless, the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion’s mark inside the Bellator MMA cage falls to a disappointing 1-3.
The grass may be greener, but the competition isn’t any easier.
With the win, Patricky took to the mic in his post-fight speech to call for a championship fight against current Lightweight champion, Brent Primus. Of course, Michael Chandler wants his rematch against Brent, so we now sit and wait to see what Bellator matchmakers opt to do.
