Stefan Struve’s return to Rotterdam, Netherlands, didn’t go quite as planned earlier today (Sat., Sept. 2, 2017) at UFC Fight Night 115 live on UFC Fight Pass from inside Ahoy Rotterdam when “Skyscraper” was finished by Alexander Volkov via third-round TKO.
While Struve landed a devastating knee early into the fight that cut Volkov’s cheek in half, he simply couldn’t get past the precision and persistence of Volkov on the feet. After suffering his first knockout defeat since Alistair Overeem flattened him back in 2014, Struve posted the following message to his Instagram:
Struve, 29, looks pretty battered above and for good reason. Through just three rounds, Volkov out-struck the towering Dutchman 144-41. It is the most strikes “Skyscraper” has given up in his entire 19-fight UFC career.
Despite the difficult loss, Struve should be able to rebound his next time out. The UFC heavyweight division is a depleted wasteland of former contenders and big names on their way out, so a guy like “Skyscraper” will have multiple opportunities to stay afloat.
