Jacare Souza expecting Chris Weidman fight in December

MMA: UFC 208 Souza vs Boetsch Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is still trying to sort through some of its middleweight clutter, now that reigning division titleholder Michael Bisping has permitted former 170-pound kingpin Georges St-Pierre to cut the line and compete for the crown later this year.

That means former champions Luke Rockhold and Chris Weidman -- both coming off dominant victories — will be left to fend for themselves. A rematch from their UFC 194 showdown would certainly be a possibility, but Gilberto Faria, manager for top contender Ronaldo Souza, believes the promotion has other plans.

"I believe that Weidman might be the next fight, in late-December or early-January, if that’s a good date for the UFC to book this fight,” Faria told MMA Fighting. “When we get closer to that date, we’ll see more clearly what the options are for Jacare’s next opponent."

Souza (24-5, 1 NC) was able to get himself within one fight from a division title shot on two separate occasions, but came up short against Yoel Romero (UFC 194) and Robert Whittaker (UFC on FOX 24).

Soon to be 38, the Brazilian is most definitely in a do-or-die situation and needs to string together a couple of big wins before getting the chance to wear gold, in much the same way he did for Strikeforce.

Anyone like his chances?
