Fight fans will have a lot to cheer for this weekend as two events sweep over the combat sports world. Not only will the long-awaited superfight between boxing champions Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin come to fruition later tonight (Sat., Sept. 16, 2017) live on HBO pay-per-view (PPV) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, but former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold will make his anticipated return to the Octagon opposite David Branch this evening at UFC Fight Night 116 live on FOX Sports 1 from inside PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
While the two events are scheduled to overlap they will share the combat spotlight together. Joining in the celebration is none other than UFC president Dana White, who had no trouble paying tribute to the impending boxing superfight despite having his own event to worry about.
“When u LOVE fighting..... today is a GOOD day!!!!” wrote White in a recent Instagram post (shown above).
This may come as a slight surprise considering Oscar De Lay Hoya, who runs Golden Boy Promotions and is promoting “Canelo vs. Golovkin,” bashed White’s recent dive into the boxing world with Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor. The two combat sports figures traded public barbs on numerous occasions leading up to May-Mac, so it’s nice to see White taking the high road and recognizing a good boxing match when he sees one.
The “Canelo vs. Golovkin” main card is scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. ET and air exclusively on HBO PPV. To find out how to watch click here.
UFC Fight Night 116’s preliminary card is scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1, with the main card also airing on FS1 starting at 10:00 p.m. ET. To find out how to watch click here.
