Conor McGregor went ten rounds with Floyd Mayweather — one of the best boxers in the history of the sport — last night (Sat., Aug. 26, 2017) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada in a “Money Fight” that proved to be entertaining, proving a lot of doubters wrong in the process.
Though “Notorious” was eventually stopped in the 10th round by “Money” in a highly-controversial stoppage, the fiery Irishman looked like he belonged, taking it to Floyd early and often. ESPN’s Brett Okamoto spoke to Conor backstage immediately after the fight to get his thoughts on how it all went down.
“I think I smoked him in the early rounds. I was pretty handily whooping him in the early rounds. He then changed his style, he puts his gloves up and his head down, into my chest and then he went to work, I didn’t anticipate that. I had him like that (leaning back) or even like this (leaning to the side) in camp, but he completely changed his style. It completely threw me off, and he was composed in there. I wasted my punches on his gloves. I twas just a composure issue, I don’t feel from a skill level..I felt alright in there.”
McGregor went on to once again take issue with the stoppage, saying he was far from hurt, but rather fatigued, and getting wobbly is just part of what he does.
At the end of the day, “Notorious” gave Floyd all of the respect in the world for his ability to take his heavy shots early, and for showing his great composure throughout in order to claim the win, citing “Money’s” experience as a huge factor.
Speaking of which, Conor’s inexperience clearly showed in the final moments of the bout, as he could’ve very well taken a knee while on the ropes in order to get an eight count from the ref. Then again, if he didn’t think he was in any sort of trouble — as he clearly stated time and again -- then that thought never even crept into his mind.
Were you surprised at how well Conor performed?
