The odds will be stacked against UFC Lightweight champion Conor McGregor later this evening (Sat., Aug. 26, 2017) live on Showtime pay-per-view (PPV) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, when he steps inside of the boxing ring for the first time against the elusive Floyd Mayweather Jr. While Mayweather is competing for just the first time in nearly two years, “Notorious” will still have his work cut out for him.
Most combat enthusiasts are completely counting McGregor out against a defensive mastermind like “Money.” But this is the fight game and anything is truly possible when two fighters lace the gloves up and sling leather. Because of that truth, some analysts, athletes, and all-time legends around the combat sports world are entertaining the idea that McGregor can pull off the impossible upset.
In the above video, courtesy of UFC, well-respected combat sports names like UFC color commentator Joe Rogan, boxing legend “Sugar” Ray Leonard, MMA analyst Robin Black, boxing coach Freddie Roach, UFC president Dana White, boxing legend Larry Holmes, MMA legend Bas Rutten, UFC flyweight contender Joseph Benavidez, MMA coach Ray Longo, and UFC light heavyweight contender Jimi Manuwa, discuss possible avenues for a McGregor victory. The collection of minds point out McGregor’s unique style, overwhelming power, and gift of gab as reasons why the Irishman could potentially overthrow Mayweather.
While Mayweather is the favorite to pick McGregor apart and push his undefeated professional boxing record to 50-0, there’s a small chance the Irishman pulls off the biggest upset in sports history and starches the 40-year-old in fashion. But until both men enter the boxing ring later this evening everything else will remain sheer speculation.
