Mayweather vs McGregor start time, TV schedule, date, who is fighting tonight

One of the biggest fights in combat sports history is just a few hours from taking place, as pound-for-pound boxing great Floyd Mayweather attempts to collect his 50th straight win against none other than current Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion of the world, Conor McGregor, inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While many have criticized the booking of this fight, it will without a doubt be one of the biggest spectacles of the year and will likely break the bank at the box office (or not). Nevertheless, it’s history-making event that sees Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) break its old business model of never allowing its fighters to cross-compete, or co-promote, for that matter. But, at the end of the day, this is a special one-time exception that only Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather could pull off.

Plus, the winner gets to go home with this shiny new belt.

What’s Hot:

For better, or worse, the “Fight of the Century” a.k.a. “The Money Fight” is finally here. It seems that not that long ago the fight was barely announced. And now, after a memorable (or forgettable) world tour to promote the bout, pre-fight run-ins, sparring drama and so much more, Mayweather and McGregor will finally settle things inside the boxing ring.

While some are dying to see if Conor can do the unthinkable and upset perhaps the greatest boxer of his generation, others are quick to dismiss the bout as nothing more than a glorified “exhibition match” with a sole purpose of fattening both men’s wallets. And they will get paid ... handsomely.

Still, no one could ever imagine that a UFC champion would ever get the chance to step into the ring against one of the best boxers to ever lace them up. What’s even more mind boggling, is that McGregor only burst onto the mainstream scene four years ago. But, in that time “Notorious” has gone on to take the mixed martial arts (MMA) world by storm, breaking the box office bank repeatedly, earning record-setting paydays, while making history by becoming the first and only fighter in the promotion to hold two separate division titles at the same time. And now he has the chance to turn the boxing world upside-down. He gets the chance to step into the ring against one of the greatest boxers ever, a privilege only afforded to those true boxing specialists who have worked countless years to get the opportunity.

And they all failed.

No one is giving McGregor much of a chance, and rightfully so, as the man has never once competed in a professional boxing match. He can punch, he has power, but Floyd has so much more. He has experience, he has the fighting IQ, and more importantly he has great defense. Sure he may be 40 years of age, but the man can box, and he’s been doing it at the highest level for two decades.

Original Card vs. Actual Card:

Believe it or not, the card did suffer a setback, as former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (27-2-1, 17 KOs) withdrew from his “Prelims” headliner opposite Thomas Dulorme (24-2, 18 KOs) because of personal issues, which includes a death in the family, according to a report. As a result, Dulorme was rescheduled to take on Yordenis Ugas.

How The “Prelims” Look:

Two undefeated prospects will kick off the action as Juan Heraldez — who represents “The Money Team” — will take on fellow unbeaten fighter, Jose Miguel Borrego, who will be looking for his fourteenth straight win. A former Golden Gloves winner, Heraldez has been training with Mayweather for the last five years. As for Borrego, the 19-year old phenom will look to secure the biggest win of his career on the biggest stage of them all. And Borrego knows how to finish, as 12 of his 13 wins have come via stoppage. It’s truly not a bad way to kick off the event.

Who Needs A Win Badly:

Should Floyd Mayweather somehow lose to Conor McGregor, his legacy will be tarnished forever. And it will be a black eye for the sport of boxing to boot. Floyd has gone his entire career without even coming close to suffering a loss, though Jose Luis Castillo and Marcos Maidana gave him all he could handle. It’s been two decades since Floyd starting his professional boxing career, and he looks to end it in an impressive manner tonight.

But, if Conor does the unthinkable, Mayweather will have to live with the fact that he lost to an MMA fighter with zero boxing experience to his credit. That’s a pretty tough pill to swallow. Sure, he can weep on his countless piles of money, but Floyd taking this fight, to me, was mind-boggling. Some feel a win for him shouldn’t count on his professional record in order to claim the undefeated record of 50 wins a row; but, despite those objections, it will count as a win. A loss, though, will hurt so much more.

Interest Level: ???

Look, I’m going to go off script here. I won’t put a number on this event because I am personally torn. Everyone around me is excited about the match up, and I, truly and honestly, am not. Will I watch it? Of course. I am intrigued by the spectacle, by the unknown, by the “what could happen,” as many of you are. But, am I intrigued as far as hoping to see a great boxing match? No.

For starters, as great as he is, Floyd has not been in an exciting fight in a long time. And that’s fine for him, as he doesn’t get hit, he plays careful defense and gets the job done. Do I want to see a haymaker-throwing contest night in and night out? No, not really. But, I do like to see two boxers going at it, taking risks and being aggressive. Floyd, unfortunately, is not an aggressive fighter ... at all.

Then you have McGregor, who is undoubtedly one of the best MMA fighters in the sport today. He set the combat sports world on fire inside the Octagon and now he hopes to do the same in the boxing ring. But, HE IS NOT A BOXER! I’m sorry, I know we’ve heard this time and time again, but this fight simply doesn’t make sense from the purity of the sport aspect. I would have much rather preferred to see Floyd come out of retirement to face Gennady Golovkin should “GGG” take out Canelo Alvarez next month. But, that’s just me. Speaking of which, that’s a true boxing fight worthy of a $100 price tag, though it’s only going for $70.

Am I hating on “Notorious” for working his ass off to get this fight? Hell no. I give him all the props and respect for gunning for it and actually pulling it off. And if he manages to win, then his greatness can not, and should not be denied. At the end of the day, these are two of the biggest names in combat sports, ever, that will get it on in a fight that some consider just a savvy business move on both ends. And I like fights. I am not going to be a complete Debbie Downer and be pouting in a corner. I will be watching, and so will you, as will millions of other curious fight fans around the globe. But, I can’t sit here and lie to your faces and say that I’m at the edge of my seat waiting and expecting to see an epic boxing match. I just can’t.
