UFC ‘Contender Series’ 4 results: Live stream play-by-play updates

Three weeks and four Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) contracts into its debut season, Dana White’s “Tuesday Night Contender Series” continues tonight (Tues., Aug. 1, 2017) with another five mixed martial arts (MMA) match ups.

The featured attraction sees The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 23 hopeful Phil Hawes look to rebound from his first professional defeat at the expense of knockout artist Julian Marquez, while Bantamweight submission artist James Gray takes on undefeated Kyler Phillips in Fight Pass’ co-main event.

The second-biggest name on the card, TUF 24 alum Ronaldo Candido, faces unbeaten Carlos Candelario in the middle slot. Austin Arnett vs. Brandon Davis (Featherweight) and John Castaneda vs. Cheyden Leialoha (Bantamweight) round out the card.

Phil Hawes vs. Julian Marquez

Round one: Both men jabbing early. Hawes tries a body kick, lands a low kick. Good exchange in the center. Hawes shoots in for a single-leg, denied, lands a pair of big elbows on the break. Left hook, low kick. Left hook by Marquez. Hawes catches a head kick and looks for a takedown a minute in. He completes it on the cage and takes the back on the fence. Both hooks in. Marquez gets to half guard and Hawes goes to work with elbows and punches. Two minutes in. Short punches from Hawes. Marquez gets to his knees and Hawes puts both hooks in again. Marquez stands, shakes him off, and goes off with Browne elbows with two minutes to go.

Marquez landing well inside and stuffs a takedown. Marquez latches onto a Marcelotine, Hawes spins out. Right hand by Marquez and Hawes takes him down once again. Half guard with a minute to go. Hawes landing ground-and-pound, though nothing devastating as yet. 10-9 Hawes.

Round two: Marquez unloads with punches early and hurts Hawes. Hawes shoots, Marquez denies it and lands on top in half guard. Ground-and-pound landing. Hawes gets to his knees a minute in and Marquez cracks him with another right hand. Big shots inside. Hawes hauls him to the fence. Marquez denies another takedown and lands on top in half guard, landing elbows and punches. Hawes works his way to his feet and Marquez annihilates him with a head kick.

Final result: Marquez def. Hawes by KO (head kick)

James Gray vs. Kyler Phillips

Round one: Both slip throwing kicks and Gray tries to pull guard without success. Left hand by Gray, counter left from Phillips as Gray shoots. Gray defending well, flattens Gray with Browne elbows. He follows up with nasty punches and blasts Gray with a hard hammerfist for the finish.

Final result: Phillips def. Gray by TKO (elbows and punches)

Ronaldo Candido vs. Carlos Candelario

Round one: They come out swinging in the center before Candido hits a single-leg. He hops right into side control and looks for the back. One hook in. Now two, onto the body triangle. One minute in. Candelario rolling, unable to dislodge Candido. Candido looks to crank, but Candelario spins into top position and goes to work with elbows. Two minutes in. Half guard. Candido tries deep half guard. Candelario frames and fires an elbow before slipping out of a single-leg. Straight left from Candelario. Hard uppercut by Candelario and he sprawls on a shot. Hammerfists to the side of the head. Two minutes to go.

Candido transitions to a single-leg, denied, eventually pulls guard. Candelario unloading with brutal hammerfists. He waves Candido up. One minute to go. Left hook by the Brazilian. Heavy left hands hurt Candido. Well-timed shot gets Candido back on top in guard, but he’s split open somewhere. 10-9 Candelario.

Round two: Leg kick exchange to start the round. Hard uppercut by Candido and he shoots. Sprawled on, tries to pull guard but unsuccessful. Hard left from Candelario and he avoids a single-leg. Candido looking desperate. Candelario on the advance a minute in. Candudo catches an inside low kick and looks for a takedown. Browne elbows from Candelario. Candido completes the takedown against the cage, drags him back down when he stands. Candido’s got the back two minutes in. Candelario rolls into top guard and goes to work with ground-and-pound. Solid shots as Candido goes for a leg. Two minutes to go.

Candelario defending well thus far. Candido transitions to a calf slicer, but Candelario spins into top position. One minute to go. Elbows from Candelario. Candido abandons the leg and Candelario goes back to pummeling him from half guard. Candido goes for a heel hook, loses it and gives up side control. 10-9 Candelario.

Round three: Leg kick from Candelario after denying a hug. Hard 3-2 by Candido. Leg kick from Candelario, Candido answers. Candido shoots of a Candelario leg kick, denied. One minute in. Candelario to the body. Hard leg kick from Candido. Candido tries a head kick, eats a hard right for his trouble and scores a takedown on the fence. Candido lifts him and slams him down away from the fence two minutes in. Candido passes to mount with just over two minutes to go.

Candido working on a guillotine from mount. Candelario defending thus far. Short body shots from Candido to soften him up. He abandons it. One minute to go. Solid shots by the Brazilian, who locks up an arm triangle. He’s got it locked up. This looks amazingly tight, but Candelario manages to survive and regain guard. They bash away at each other and Candido hits a slam before the bell. 10-9 Candido.

Final result: Candelario def. Candido by unanimous decision

Austin Arnett vs. Brandon Davis

Round one: Davis opens with a leg kick, then sends out volleys of punches. Nice knee by Davis kicks off a combination. Davis very active early. Straight left by Arnett a minute in. Spinning back fist and a punching combo land for Davis. Arnett just misses with a right cross, eats a leg kick. Arnett just not busy enough at the moment. Two minutes in. More punching exchanges, neither lands clean. Good right hands by Arnett. Davis asks for more, eats a 1-2. 1-2 again. 1-2-3 from Arnett as they jaw at one another. Davis catches a leg and takes top position with two minutes to go.

Arnett works his way up on the fence. Davis combination, right hand from Arnett. 1-2 lands for Davis. Elbow connects with a minute to go. Counter right off an Arnett jab. Another right hand and calf kick. Arnett cracks him with a right in return. 1-2 lands for Davis on the fence. 10-9 Davis.

Round two: The pace doesn’t let up early on. Hard right from Davis, straight left from Arnett. Good combo lands for Arnett, who eats a right hand. One minute in. Davis catches a kick and lands a leg kick. Head kick attempts. 1-1-2 by Arnett. Right hand lands, Davis comes back with combinations. Stiff jab knocks Davis back and Arnett clamps down on an arm-in guillotine. Davis manages to tough it out and settle in guard two minutes in. Big elbows and punches from Davis and he’s busted Arnett open. Arnett kicks him off with two minutes to go.

Arnett puts him on the fence. Combination from Arnett on the break. They’re slugging on the fence. Knee and rights from Davis, bigger knee from Arnett. Elbow lands for Davis, only for an Arnett low blow to cut the momentum short. One minute to go. They’re both still going. Davis bashing at the lead leg, lands a right hand. Davis chewing him up right now. Arnett to the body. Good jab up top. Again, right to the body afterwards. Davis wades after him before the bell. 10-9 Davis.

Round three: Davis still pushing forward, landing combinations. Right hand from Arnett. Good body shot, harder combination from Davis upstairs. Heavy exchanges. Davis whiffs on a spinning back fist and eats a nice body shot. One minute in. Spinning back elbow by Davis and they go back to slugging it out. Nice uppercut and punching combo by Davis. Heavy right hands. Two minutes in. Arnett still wading after him. Davis just drowning him in volume at the moment. Good counter right. Another. Arnett right hand doesn’t faze his foe. 1-2 from Davis. He’s teeing off on him but they’re both too tired to land finishing shots. Two minutes to go.

Brief clinch. Uppercut from Arnett inside, 1-2 from Davis in return. One minute to go. The exchanges continue despite visible fatigue and it’s still Davis getting the best of it. Stinging right by Arnett, who tries a flying knee. Biggest right hand of the fight doesn’t budge Davis. 10-9 Davis.

Final result: Davis def. Arnett by unanimous decision

John Castañeda vs. Cheyden Leialoha

Round one: Leialoha opens with head kicks and a clinch attempt on the fence. 2-1 from Castañeda. Leialoha catches a low kick and takes him down into guard. One minute in. Leialoha passes to half guard, Castañeda regains full but eats an elbow as he does. Castañeda tries to lean into him, forcefully flattened back down. Castañeda sporting a cut. Leialoha tries to dive in with a big right hand and gives Castañeda room to stand in the process two minutes in. Castañeda blocking head kicks. Two minutes to go.

1-2 from Leialoha, body kick, takedown attempt. Knee from Castañeda as they separate. Low kick lands, Leialoha lands one in return. Right hand from Leialoha. One minute to go. Castañeda falls short with a wheel kick, lands a leg kick. Castañeda looks for a single-leg, stuffed, just avoids a knee. Left hand lands. Leialoha body kick, Castañeda head kick. 10-9 Leialoha.

Round two: Leialoha opens with a body kick, eats a hard leg kick. Checks the next one, eats a knee up top that has him shooting. Castañeda stuffs it and they separate. One minute in. Hard right lands for Castañeda, who denies a level change and goes low-high. He catches a body kick, can’t use it. Leialoha body kick again two minutes in. Hard leg kicks from Castañeda. Castañeda ducks a right hand and hits a takedown into guard. Two minutes to go.

Leialoha maintaining guard, not offering much. Decent shots from Castañeda. Leialoha works his way up on the fence and separates. Left hook dings Castañeda, who shoots for a high-crotch. Can’t get it. One minute to go. Leg kick lands. Castañeda digs a knee to the body in the clinch. Separation. 10-9 Castañeda.

Round three: Castañeda lands an early leg kick and 1-2, Leialoha tries to go high. Ref calls time after Castañeda catches a finger in the eye. They go right at it when they restart. Castañeda hits a long double-leg against the cage. Leialoha pops right back up, framing hard and landing a good knee. Leialoha hits his own takedown soon after, Castañeda attempting the clinch. Two minutes in. Full guard. Strong control from Leialoha, but Castañeda makes his way up and shoots. Stuffed. Leialoha hits a takedown with two minutes to go and denies a grab for his leg.

Leialoha looking for the back. Castañeda reverses position, can’t keep him down. Another takedown gets Leialoha to his rear. Half guard now and he starts with the hammerfists. One minute to go. Leialoha gives up his back with thirty seconds to go. Castañeda can’t get the finish and Leialoha scrambles up. 10-9 Castañeda.

Final result: Castañeda def. Leialoha by unanimous decision
