Heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem looked to continue his climb back to title contention last night (Sat., July 8, 2017) at UFC 213 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, when he met familiar foe and former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum. These two contenders have met twice before, each walking away with a victory.
In the trilogy fight, Overeem played a game of patience. He stalked Werdum down with awkward stances and constant switches until finding a home for hard right hands and knees inside. And even after Werdum landed a knee from hell in the third round that wobbled the Dutchman head-to-toe, Overeem still fought to defend off his back and limit the Brazilian’s offense. In the end, Overeem exited the cage with a majority decision win, beating Werdum on the scorecards despite sustaining more damage.

With this win, Overeem moves his divisional win streak to two, offering hope that he can once again make a run at heavyweight gold. If the 37-year-old can limit the times he gets clipped in the chin then maybe he can get there quicker than expected.
