Talk about short notice. UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is willing step up on a few hours notice to challenge Valentina Shevchenko tonight (Sat., July 8, 2017) at UFC 213 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, after UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes was pulled from the main event due to illness.
UFC president Dana White first revealed the news via Instagram:
Jedrzejczyk, who last defended her title at UFC 211 this past May when she defeated Jessica Andrade via decision, quickly followed suit via Twitter:
I spoke with @danawhite and the @ufc - we are going to try and make this fight happen! #ufc213 Watch #Instavideo:https://t.co/x8L25TxIwm pic.twitter.com/FMBJtsiXA8

Even Shevchenko, who defeated Jedrzejczyk three times during her professional Muay Thai career, chimed in and agreed to the last-minute change.

Nunes is out and @joannajedrzejczyk is begging us to let her fight @bulletvalentina tonight! pic.twitter.com/m8mtDJTwek
Unfortunately, MMA Fighting’s Marc Raimondi was quick to put a kibosh on the enticing matchup after speaking with Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) executive director Bob Bennett.
Per NAC executive director Bob Bennett, it would be too late at this point to replace Nunes with anyone. #UFC213

With Jedrzejczyk unable to move up in weight and take on Shevchenko on less than 12 hours notice, Yoel Romero’s interim middleweight title scrap with Robert Whittaker will now serve as UFC 213’s main event.
