Jon Jones made a triumphant return to the Octagon by knocking out Daniel Cormier in the third round of their Light Heavyweight title fight at last night’s (Sat., July 29, 2017) UFC 214 pay-per-view (PPV) event in Anaheim, California.
Not only did he reclaim his 205-pound strap, but started his way back to becoming the king of the pay-per-view (PPV) box office, as UFC president Dana White revealed during the post-fight presser the event was trending at over one million buys.
“Tonight was a big night. Tonight was trending over a million buys. It was a big night, it was a great card and it was one of the best cards we’ve ever done, on paper and in person. Yeah, it’s good to have him (Jones) back.”
Indeed, while Jones and White may not be on speaking terms, all is good between them as long as they can make the big bucks together. Of course, those buys were aided by a stellar card, as it featured three title fights, including Cris Cyborg’s win over Tanya Evinger.
Plus, the much-anticipated Welterweight bout between Donald Cerrone and Robbie Lawler added even more fire power to the event. Still, it’s safe to say that most were tuning in to see Jon’s return, and Cormier’s attempt to get some much-desired revenge.
In the end, “Bones” was able to return to the top of the MMA game with a knockout win over “DC.” As far claiming the undisputed title of PPV king, that could a be a bit tougher, as this guy is apparently not done with MMA, yet.
