Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to action for UFC 214: “Cormier vs. Jones 2,” which went down last night (Sat., July 29, 2017) inside the Honda Center and airing live on pay-per-view (PPV).
The promotion's latest mixed martial arts (MMA) card was headlined by a Light Heavyweight championship rematch between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones which saw “Bones” reclaims his strap by knocking Daniel out in the third round. In the co-main event, Tyron Woodley held on to his Welterweight strap in a rather lackluster affair against Demian Maia.
Winner: Jon Jones
Who He Should Fight Next: Alexander Gustafsson
Volkan Oezedmir made another splash by absolutely obliterating Jimi Manuwa in just 42 seconds. Still, his “name value” isn’t up there at the moment, and whether we like it or not, that sometimes plays a big factor when it comes to title fights. Of course, winning is the biggest factor, but Gustafsson has the “name” advantage over Volkan, as well. Plus, he has history with Jones, will be the biggest factor overall when it comes to handing out the next title shot.
Winner: Tyron Woodley
Who He Should Fight Next: Robbie Lawler
Georges St-Pierre is not walking through that door. Well, he is, but he isn’t going to be fighting for the Welterweight title next, as Dana White instead opted to pit Rush” against Michael Bisping for the Middleweight title as a result of Tyron’s lackluster win against Demian Maia. As a result, “The Chosen One” not only lost out on the biggest payday of his career, but he’ll now have to settle for yet another rematch, as he will more than likely face “Ruthless” once again after Lawler took out Donald Cerrone in a thrilling three-round bout.
Winner: Cris Cyborg
Who She Should Fight Next: Holly Holm
Whether most of you agree with it or not, that is the fight that’s going to happen next. And it’s no surprise, really, as the women’s Featherweight division has pretty much no one else. Plus, Holm has already shown interest in the fight. Megan Anderson is always an option, but there’s no telling if UFC wants to go that route at this moment. Plus, the Holm fight has the makings of a potential upset, as “The Preacher’s Daughter” has the boxing background that could ultimately provide fits for Cris. Just sit back and enjoy it, folks.
Winner: Volkan Oezdemir
Who He Should Fight Next: ???
Despite another highlight reel knockout win, Volkan finds himself in a rather odd position. Currently ranked at No. 5, every other fighter in front of him is coming off a loss, excluding Alexander Gustafsson. And since “The Mauler” will likely get the title fight over him, he will probably be forced to ride the pine for an a bit or take another fight in the interim. So, I can’t pick a potential for for Vokan as a result, as taking a fight against someone out of the top five doesn’t make sense. The best case scenario for him is UFC matchmakers decide to book him against Gustafsson for the right to face “Bones” at the end of the year.
Winner: Robbie Lawler
Who Should He Fight Next: Tyron Woodley
Again, since there are no other worthy contenders at 170-pounds, as the other top three fighters in the division that surround Robbie are coming off losses, “Lawler” may have unexpectedly found himself in another title fight.
