Former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler was back in action for the first time in one year last night (Sat., July 29, 2017) at UFC 214 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., when he took on willing dance partner Donald Cerrone. The two contenders were scheduled to meet back at UFC 213, as well as UFC 205 last year, but Cerrone was yanked due to injury.
To make up for lost time, Lawler came barreling out of the gate in the first round, attacking with countless strikes in the opening moments and putting “Cowboy” in serious trouble. Cerrone hung on. The former lightweight started to land crisp elbows in the clinch before securing a takedown and scoring some points in top position. Round 2 saw Cerrone take control on the feet by using level changes, knee-punch combinations and short kicks to the body. “Cowboy” scored a ton of points and did more than enough to win the frame.
As the third round commenced, Lawler snapped back to his crazed antics and rushed Cerrone like he did back in the first. Cerrone offered some of his own offensive attacks, but Lawler started to find a home for his body kicks which seemed to bother Cerrone. In the end, it was “Ruthless” who walked away with the unanimous decision nod.

With this win, Lawler gets back into the win column and proves that he can rebound after a tough knockout loss. The UFC veteran will have to get a little better at deflecting damage, but there’s few fighters in his way towards locking down a title shot in 2018.
