Patrick Cummins and Gian Villante came out swinging in their Light Heavyweight bout on the main card of the UFC on FOX 25 event in Uniondale, N.Y., this past weekend (Sat., July 22, 2017). But, it was clear — at least in the early going — that Villante wanted it a bit more, coming out the aggressor and hitting “Durkin” with heavy shots.
Unfortunately, an accidental headbutt halted Villante’s momentum momentarily, as referee “Big” John McCarthy had to freeze the action to check out the injury, which was a big gash right on Patrick’s dome. “Durkin” picked up his own pace in round two, though Villante refused to give an inch, sticking to his gameplan throughout the fight.
After a three-round war that left both men bloodied, battered and bruised — and all the fans in attendance jumping for joy — Cummins walked away with a split-decision win, which for the life of me I can’t see how.
