Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to action for UFC on FOX 25: “Weidman vs. Gastelum,” which went down yesterday (Sat., July 22, 2017) inside Nassau Veterans Coliseum, airing live on FOX. The promotion's latest mixed martial arts (MMA) card was headlined by a Middleweight scrap that saw Chris Weidman choke out Kelvin Gastelum to pick up his first win in two years (video highlights here). In the co-main event of the evening, Daren Elkins and Dennis Bermudez went to war in a thrilling Featherweight scrap (see it here).
Winner: Chris Weidman
Who He Should Fight Next: Ronaldo Souza
Yes, Chris got back on the winning track, but he’ll need a lot more than one win after a three-fight skid to get back to the big dance. Plus, Robert Whittaker is in line, and whether we like it or not, Georges St-Pierre is still lingering, waiting for the chance to pound on the 185-pound title. “Jacare” is currently on the mend from a shoulder injury, but if he comes back before the year is out, I’m digging a fight between him and Chris. I’ve wanted this fight for a while now, and there is no better time than now than to book it. A win over “Jacare” will definitely get “All American” back into title contention.
Winner: Darren Elkins
Who He Should Fight Next: Doo Ho Choi
Choi likes to scrap, as does Elkins, so this fight is a match made in combat heaven. Elkins is making a name for himself in the highly-competitive 145-pound weight class, and making a statement against Choi will most definitely shoot him higher up the rankings. As for Choi, a matchup against someone like Elkins is what he needs after suffering his first-ever loss to Cub Swanson last December.
Winner: Jimmie Rivera
Who He Should Fight Next: Dominick Cruz
“El Terror” called Cruz out after his win, and I like this bout very much. It Jimmie had his way, he’d have that bout or one against T.J. Dillashaw for the interim Bantamweight title, but I don’t think Cody Garbrandt will be out much longer, as he is rumored to be making his return on Nov. 4, 2017 in Madison Square Garden against T.J. Dillashaw. And that’s just when Rivera wants to face Cruz, and they can serve as backups should either Cody or Dillashaw fall out.
Winner: Patrick Cummins
Who He Should Fight Next: Misha Cirkunov
Cummins escaped Long Island with a razor-thin split decision win over Gian Villante that didn’t sit too well with the Long Island crowd, seeing as there hometown hero busted up “Durkin” from pillar to post. But, the judges felt Cummins did enough to earn the win, giving him his second in a row. For his next fight, I’d like to see him face Cirkunov, who suffered the first loss of his UFC career not too long ago. The fight will be a good gauge to see where both men stand in the light heavyweight division.
