Chris Weidman was tonight (Sat., July 22, 2017) in search of his first win in more than two years — a span that saw him drop three straight — as he headlined UFC on FOX 25 against Kelvin Gastelum in his backyard of Long Island, New York.
And much to the relief of “All American,” he did just that, sinking in an arm-triangle choke on the former Welterweight contender in the third round to force a tap. But, Weidman had to work for it, using his wrestling to land a personal best eight takedowns on his good friend.
Plus, he also survived a knockdown in the closing seconds of round one, as Gastelum decked Weidman with a clean left to send him crashing to the canvas. Fortunately for him, time ran out and he survived Gastelum’s onslaught. Now, “All American” can sleep easy knowing he avoided a four-fight skid and gets new life in a highly-competitive division.
