Jeff Horn defeated Manny Pacquiao last night (Sat., July 1, 2017) via unanimous decision live on ESPN from inside Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia to win the WBO Welterweight title.
A decision that didn’t sit too well with many, as most felt “Pacman” had done more than enough to win the fight. Unfortunately, the ringside judges felt Horn remained undefeated at 14-0 by handing Pacquiao his seventh career loss.
After the bout, longtime trainer and current ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas, who was ringside, unloaded on the judges, saying that either they were too incompetent to judge the fight or were corrupted (via The Herd Now).
“It’s only one of two things, it’s either incompetence or corruption. When you see 117-111, I don’t think anyone could be that incompetent. I’m sorry. If you know the sport, you watch the sport, you can’t be that incompetent. You see who’s landing clean, who’s just throwing, who’s not landing clean, who almost got knocked out, you can’t be that incompetent. So what else could it be? Corruption. Nothing else. I’m sorry. I love this sport, it’s the greatest sport in the world. It was a great day, a great night back where you guys are. It was great for the fans out there to get it on free TV, brought back to free TV where boxing belongs. It was great! It was great theater. There’s no theater like boxing. Nothing. But the decision stunk.”
Check out the ridiculous scoring here.
With two of the biggest boxing events in recent memory set to go down within one month of each other as Conor McGregor challenges Floyd Mayweather on August 24 and Canelo Alvarez set to meet Gennady Golovkin on September 15 in Las Vegas, Nevada, the ringside judges will no doubt be under a big microscope to get the scoring right following this recent drama.
Assuming they’ll be needed at all, of course.
