UFC Glasgow: ‘Happy’ Santiago Ponzinibbio dismisses eye-poke accusations in rout of Gunnar Nelson

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Nelson vs Ponzinibbio Per Haljestam-USA TODAY Sports

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight contender Santiago Ponzinibbio scored the biggest win of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career by stopping Gunnar Nelson in the main event of UFC Fight Night 113 last weekend in Glasgow, Scotland.

But shortly after the celebration, Nelson complained that an inadvertent eye poke left him seeing double and defenseless against the Argentinian’s onslaught. As you might expect, Santiago was not on board with that assessment.

From his conversation with MMA Fighting:

"I went there to knock him out and thank God it went as expected, I won by knockout. If (the eye poke) happened, of course it wasn’t intentional, but I watched the video again and didn’t see it. I don’t know. It doesn’t take anything away from the win. What he says doesn’t change anything. There’s a referee inside the Octagon looking at it, and he can stop the fight any time he wants. The No. 8 in the world lasted 82 seconds. He can say whatever he wants. A beautiful knockout for my career, another one in the first round. It’s my fourth first-round knockout (in the UFC). I’m happy."

The performance earned “Gente Boa” an extra $50,000.

Ponzinibbio (25-3), currently ranked No. 14, is now the winner of five straight with three knockouts and will no doubt find himself promoted when the official rankings are released later this week.

But will the promotion grant him this request?
