Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to action for UFC Fight Night 113: “Nelson vs. Ponzinibbio,” which went down last night (Sun., July 16, 2017) inside inside the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland airing live on FOX Sports 1. The promotion's latest mixed martial arts (MMA) card was headlined by a welterweight scrap that saw Santiago Ponzinibbio knockout Gunnar Nelson in the very first round (video highlights here). In the co-main event of the evening, Cynthia Calvillo kept her momentum going by outscoring Joanne Calderwood to score a unanimous decision win (see it here).

Biggest winner: Santiago Ponzinibbio

“Gente Boa” wasn’t exactly on everyone’s radar going into his headlining bout against “Gunni.” But after the spectacular knockout he scored over one of the best grapplers in all of mixed martial arts (MMA), that’s about to change. The Argentinian has now won five fights i na row inside the Octagon, and he’s shown he can do it in either with his fists for an early stoppage or grind it our for a full three rounds. The challenges will only get tougher for Ponzinibbio, who already has his eyes set on two established veterans former champion.

Runner Up: Cynthia Calvillo

Calvillo kept her undefeated record (6-0, 3-0 UFC) in tact after outworking Joanne Calderwood in the co-main event, using a mixture of strikes, takedowns and submission attempts to impress the judges. While the fans in attendance clearly didn’t agree with the result, Calvillo won the bout hands down. As a result, she moves up the women’s Flyweight ladder and also scores more points with company president Dana White, who recently compared her tenacity and willingness to throw down like that of Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey. Big compliment, indeed.

Biggest Loser: Joanne Calderwood

“JoJo” simply can’t get it going. After settling in with her new team at TriStar gym, Calderwood has dropped two in a row, losing previously to former title contender Jessica Andrade. What makes the loss sting a bit more for Calderwood was the fact that she was fighting in front of her hometown crowd for the first time in two years. Joanne now moves to 3-3 in her Octagon career, so it means she has to step it up in her next fight and deliver an above average performance if she wants to climb the ranks and become the superstar many felt she could be following her stint on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF).
