Cynthia Calvillo and Joanne Calderwood threw down in the co-main of event of UFC Fight Night 113: “Nelson vs. Ponzinibbio” earlier today (Sun., July 16, 2017) in Glasgow, Scotland, and they didn’t disappoint.
The two talented ladies came out with everything they had, as “JoJo” was bent on shining for her hometown crowd while Calvillo wanted to keep her momentum going in order to live up the comparisons to Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey UFC president Dana White levied on her.
In the first round, Calvillo almost managed to pull off a couple of submission wins in the closing seconds, as she sunk in an armbar after a failed rear-naked choke before the horn rang.
In round two, Calderwood dropped Calvillo with a kick to the chest, though Cynthia jumped right back up in zero time flat. And it was obvious Calvillo was getting the better in the striking department, busting up Calderwood’s face, though she did manage to land a spinning back fist before Cynthia’s hit her intended target.
Round three was primarily spent on the feet with not much action to speak of, as both women were picking their shots carefully while avoiding getting clipped and dropped in the final frame. Cynthia managed to get the fight to the ground in the final seconds in order to try and secure a hail mary submission win, though Joanne managed to play defense just long enough. In the end, Calvillo did enough in the eyes of the judges to take home the unanimous decision victory.
