Frank Mir will fight until he’s 45, calls out Fedor Emelianenko

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion Frank Mir is no longer employed by the world’s preeminent mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion, after coming to (amicable) terms on his UFC release earlier this month.

Now that Mir is free to do as he pleases, the former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) color commentator is mapping out “big fights” for the duration of his combat sports career, including a heavyweight showdown against Fedor Emelianenko.

From Eyes on the Game (via MMA Fighting):

“I’d rather fight named fighters and Fedor’s somebody I’ve always wanted to fight and I think that it would be nice to be able to complete that kind of Who’s Who of my resume. I enjoy fighting. I want to fight for as long as possible. I don’t think I can fight at the same capacity that I fought in the past. The days of fighting three times in a year is probably over with. Once is probably gonna be more or less [the goal], or almost twice or three times in two years. Just enjoy martial arts, enjoy the lifestyle, and fight big fights. I’m thinking maybe 45. If you just handle it smart, I think you can do it.”

Mir would need to finagle a deal with Bellator MMA.

That’s where “The Last Emperor” is currently plying his trade, though like Mir, Emelianenko is still looking for the win column. The former is coming off a knockout loss to Matt Mitrione while the latter recently suffered back-to-back losses.
