Oscar De La Hoya takes high road with Dana White, but McGregor vs Mayweather will ‘still suck’

Esther Lin/MMA Fighting

Dana White admits he likes Oscar De La Hoya and respects everything he’s done -- and continues to do — in the boxing arena. Still, that didn’t prevent the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White from slamming “The Golden Boy” after the former boxer-turned promoter pooped all over the much-talked about boxing match between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather.

So how did Oscar react to White’s comments? Well, to hear him tell it, he’s taking the high road, refusing to bash his friend in the media; however, he had no qualms about criticizing the potential scrap once again.

"My response is, I have to take the high road," De La Hoya said during an interview with ESPN's SportsCenter. "Obviously, he says my fight sucks, I say the same thing. That fight is going to suck. It really is because McGregor is not a boxer, he doesn’t have not one round of experience inside the ring as a boxer, and he's going up against the best boxer on the planet, in our generation, against Mayweather?”

Still, at the end of the day, Oscar has a tremendous amount of respect for mixed martial arts (MMA), White and McGregor, but that doesn’t change the fact that “Notorious” isn’t a professional boxer

“He’s the best MMA fighter, the best UFC fighter, I have all the respect in the world for him, for UFC and for Dana White for what he’s accomplished and for what he’s done, but he is not a boxer and he’s going up against the best boxer on the planet? In our generation? Against Mayweather, and he's 0-0 and he thinks he's going to beat him? It's impossible. I couldn't beat him,” proclaimed De La Hoya.

Ricky Hatton agrees.

"We know who Mayweather is. Mayweather is a pure boxer who is the best boxer on the planet today. We know that. Therefore, we know it's going to be an easy fight for him," he said, while proclaiming he made the much-anticipated fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golvkin to give fans a real fight.

Indeed, the unanimous opinion is that Mayweather will have his way with McGregor inside the boxing ring. That said, many feel the bout is nothing but a cash grab. And while that may very well be the case, it seems fight fans definitely want to see it and White is intent on giving it to them.

Just don’t expect it to go down on September 16.
