It was quite the Octagon debut for MMA journeyman Brian Kelleher last night (Sat., June 3, 2017) at UFC 212 from inside the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when he submitted hometown favorite Iuri Alcantara inside two minutes of the first round (highlights here). As good as Kelleher’s performance was, it was the things he said in his post-fight interview with Brian Stann that caught the attention of the Brazilian fans.
“Dana, that’s No. 13 in a row!,” Kelleher screamed. “I just took No. 13 out! I want a top-10 guy! I don’t want this slow pace! Feed me to the sharks! I’m ready!”
“Hey! Sean Shelby, Dana White! 50 Gs!,” Kelleher added. “Change my life! I came to Brazil and took out their hometown boy!”
In an attempt to silence a hungry Brazilian crowd upset after seeing Alcantara tap, Kelleher proceeded to shush them. That sort of thing may go over well elsewhere, but not so much in Brazil.
“It was intense,” Kelleher said during a backstage interview captured by MMA Junkie. “I kind of got carried away in the post-fight interview because they were yelling at me. I had my adrenaline up, so I fired back. It was just all fun, but I guess they took it serious. They were throwing beer cans at me on the way out, so they had to rush me out. But I’m good. Everything is fine.”
With his UFC debut in the books, “Boom” can now focus on climbing the bantamweight rankings heading into 2018. He’s obviously talented inside of the cage and on the mic, so hopefully the promotion can ride Kelleher’s momentum from UFC 212 and feed him a “shark” his next time out.
