Following his third-round TKO victory (highlights here) over Jose Aldo last night (Sat., June 3, 2017) at UFC 212 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, newly crowned featherweight champion Max Holloway was asked about Conor McGregor in the post-fight press conference (watch here). While McGregor’s name eluded Holloway’s mouth for the majority of his victory celebration, the Hawaiian couldn’t escape “Notorious.”
“I want to defend this,” said Holloway pointing to the 145-pound title. “Come try and take over my village. Off with your head. I got my throne, if you want it, come see me.” added Holloway, who insisted that he doesn’t want to “hold up” the UFC featherweight division.
Remember, McGregor reigned over the entire featherweight crop after demolishing Aldo in 13 seconds back at UFC 194. But after deciding to leave the roster behind in favor of welterweight battles with Nate Diaz and a lightweight title fight with Eddie Alvarez, the Irishman has yet to return to the division.
What makes things even more interesting is that Holloway and McGregor have fought once before. McGregor defeated “Blessed” back in 2013 in what remains the only decision win on the featherweight resume of “Notorious.” It was also the last time Holloway lost inside of the Octagon before winning his next 11 fights (including UFC 212).
While Holloway played it fairly coy about a potential rematch with McGregor at 145 pounds, the featherweight champion would be stupid not to want that money fight. Of course, McGregor is currently tied up in contract talks to fight boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr, so Holloway may have to wait a long time to get his second crack at Mystic Mac.
McGregor has yet to publicly respond to Holloway’s knockout of Aldo at UFC 212.
