Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion Matt Hughes is a fighter, both inside and outside the cage, and is reportedly improving following his near-fatal train wreck last week near his hometown in Illinois.
Our original report here.
“He is improving and continues to show us his heart and determination each day,” according to a statement from his family (via MMA Fighting). “He has a long road ahead of him and your continued thoughts and prayers will help him with the journey.”
Hughes remains hospitalized and to date, has been “minimally responsive.”
The UFC hall-of-famer could be transferred to a facility that specializes in traumatic brain injuries; however, it’s still too early to determine the extent of his injuries after his truck was struck by an oncoming train.
Police are still investigating the accident.
Despite his retirement a few years back, Hughes was contemplating a return to mixed martial arts (MMA) just last month.
