Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently stripped Germaine de Randamie of her 145-pound strap — before she even made a single title defense — for refusing to battle featherweight No. 1 contender Cristiane Justino.
Sound familiar?
It shouldn’t, as reigning middleweight kingpin Michael Bisping insists he’s not the 185-pound version of “Iron Lady” and that any parallels between his situation — involving No. 1 contender Yoel Romero — are inaccurate.
From “The Count’s” official podcast (via MMA Fighting):
"I've got to be careful about what I say here because I know everybody's gonna talk shit about me and say, ‘You're a fucking pussy. You fucking defended against Dan Henderson. You're avoiding number one contenders.' That is not what's happened, motherfuckers. The UFC offered me Dan Henderson, I took the fight and then I had knee surgery. Two knee surgeries in fact. I know people are gonna talk shit because it seems from the outside that I'm fucking avoiding Yoel, which isn't the case at all. I had two knee surgeries, I'm back training now but I still couldn't do a training camp. But I do see the parallels that people will draw on and call me a fucking hypocrite."
Not sure why anyone would think that.
Bisping has just one title defense since capturing the crown well over a year ago. That came against geriatric slugger Dan Henderson — by way of razor-thin decision — before Romero smashed his way to the top of the leaderboard.
How long he remains there, could depend on this.
