Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. are set to make millions of dollars on Saturday May 6th when they face off against each other in Las Vegas. But if something goes wrong for either man leading up to their fight, they could lose a couple of those millions at Friday afternoon's weigh-ins. That's because of a clause in their bout agreement that fines the fighters a million dollars per pound of weight over 164.5.
The ridiculously stiff fines may apply to both fighters, but are clearly included to keep Chavez Jr. from missing weight (as he's done several times before) and showing up to fights out of shape (as he did against Andrzej Fonfara). Canelo and his team have a huge interest in making sure Chavez shows up on weight ... Canelo is moving up to face him at a higher weight than he's ever competed at, one of the points on this fight that makes it so intriguing to fans.
"The final couple of pounds will tell us everything," Chavez's team manager Sean Gibbons said recently. "If he makes that final cut simple, it’s game over for Canelo. He’ll be a dead man, a middleweight getting pounded by a cruiserweight."
And Chavez is allegedly working hard on making sure he's on point and not out a million or two million bucks. According to his trainer Angel Heredia, Chavez was at 167 pounds on Wednesday and getting by on 1000 calories worth of strawberries and egg whites. Of course, an extreme weight cut doesn't guarantee Chavez Jr. will come in with a size and strength advantage. All too often, fighters that cut improperly end up sapping their endurance and affecting their ability to fight.
The Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. weigh-ins go down at 5:30PM EST from Las Vegas. Make sure to check back here at MMAMania.com for a live stream!
