Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to action for UFC Fight Night 109: “Gustafsson vs. Teixeira,” which went down yesterday (Sun., May 28, 2017) inside Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden airing live on Fox Sports 1. The promotion's latest mixed martial arts (MMA) card was headlined by a Light Heavyweight fight that saw Alexander Gustafsson absolutely dominate Glover Teixeria for five rounds before knocking him out in the final frame (see it). Also, Volkan Oezdemir knocked out Misha Cirkunov in just 28 seconds in the co-main event of the evening (highlights).
Biggest winner: Alexander Gustaffson
In what was one of the best performances of his career, “The Mauler” schooled Teixeira on the feet for five rounds, brutalizing “Hands of Stone” from the jump with accurate combos and all-around crisp striking. Alex was well on his way to a clean unanimous decision heading into round five. But, that didn’t stop the towering Swede from keeping up his intensity, connecting on a sweet four-punch combination that consisted of three consecutive uppercuts following by a right cross to score a walk-of knockout victory. Now, “The Mauler” is sitting pretty at the top of the Light Heavyweight division and could be in line for the winner of Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier 2. Assuming Jimi Manuwa doesn’t cut the line.
Runner Up: Volkan Oezdemir
Volkan is the real deal. After edging out Ovince Saint Preux in his previous outing, Oezdemir left no doubt in his bout against fast-rising contender Misha Cirkunov, knocking him out in a mere 28 seconds to make it two-for-two inside the Octagon. In a division that isn’t short on tough challenges, Volkan’s performance will help him jump the rankings and get closer to facing the cream of the crop. He called out Jimi Manuwa after the win, though I don’t think “Posterboy” will be too eager to accept, as he hopes to have bigger fish to fry. That said, Volkan has proven he’ll be a tough draw for anyone ready and willing to mix it up.
Biggest Loser: Misha Cirkunov
Once dubbed a scary “gangster” to be feared at 205 pounds by one of the hardest-hitting fighters in the sport of MMA, Anthony Johnson, Cirkunov’s stock took a huge hit with his flash knockout loss to Volkan. Not only did it stop his eight-fight win streak an gave him his first loss in four years, but it ended his rise up the division ladder momentarily. To make things worse for Misha, the loss comes just two months after he signed a new contract with Ultimate fighting Championship (UFC) after a brief misunderstanding with Dana White. It’s back to the drawing board for the hard-hitting brawler, who will think twice about bull-rushing his foes as he’s accustomed to based on the aforementioned results.
