I guess this date was too good to be true.
Top lightweight contenders Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier put on one helluva show at the UFC 211: “Miocic vs. Dos Santos 2” pay-per-view (PPV) event last Saturday night (May 13, 2017) inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
Watch the video highlights here.
Unfortunately, their 155-pound war of attrition was cut short by an illegal knee that tarnished “The Diamond,” leading referee Herb Dean to rule the bout a “no contest” toward the end of the second stanza.
Though it’s been argued that a disqualification was more appropriate.
Plans for an immediate rematch took a hit on Wednesday when Poirier’s manager, Robert Roveta, revealed a concussion that was being taken “very seriously,” according to MMA Fighting, which means a do-over could be on hold until November.
Concussions are scary (just ask this lightweight).
In the meantime, the war of words is still raging on Twitter. Alvarez is convinced Poirier took the disqualification as a “way out,” while “The Diamond” is promising to finish what he started in “The Lone Star State.”
@DustinPoirier Next fight is You ... don't get too excited Your not the first guy to hurt me badly before I finished him ..knee or no knee U wanted out
