Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar tried to derail the Yair Rodriguez hype train last night (Sat., May 13, 2017) at UFC 211 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, when the two met in a pivotal top featherweight matchup. Unfortunately for “El Pantera,” Edgar had all the answers for his unorthodox offense.
It was Edgar’s fight from the early going. Not only did he catch Rodriguez on the feet by getting inside with head movement and footwork, but he absolutely butchered the young Mexican on the ground. Edgar landed vicious elbows, heavy combos and non-stop punishment for the majority of the first round, leaving Rodriguez’s left eye unrecognizable (see the pic here). Rodriguez began Round 2 with a spinning kick, but Edgar took him down and punished the already swollen-shut eye. “El Pantera” threatened with a leg lock, but Edgar was too strong in top position. In between rounds, the doctor’s decided that Rodriguez’s golf ball-sized eye was too damaged to continue. Edgar won via second-round technical knockout.

With this win, Edgar notches his second-straight victory since losing to champion Jose Aldo back at UFC 200. As long as he can continues to swat away rising talents like Rodriguez, the veteran should get one more title shot before it’s all said and done.
