“The biggest fight ever,” according to Oscar De La Hoya, is all set to go down on Sept. 16, 2017 as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will step inside the ring to face off against one the most devastating power-hitters in boxing today, Gennady Golovkin.
The announcement of the much-anticipated match up not only jacked the Sept 16. date from a proposed bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor, but it also took a lot of the attention away from it. That said, De La Hoya — the man behind making the upcoming mega-fight — advised Mayweather to forget about facing “Notorious” and step into the ring to face the winner of “Canelo” and “GGG” during a recent appearance on ESPN’s First Take.
That’s because the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world is above fighting someone with no boxing experience whatsoever.
“Even Floyd, after this fight with Canelo and Golovkin, forget about “The Notorious One” Conor McGregor,” De La Hoya said. “Forget about a fighter who has zero experience, who has zero fights, who has zero amateur experience. Forget about that.
“Mayweather’s better than that,” he continued. “Mayweather, look, if you want to fight or have a rematch against Canelo — or a fight against Golovkin — go after them. After Canelo and Golovkin fight, go after the winner.”
Mayweather — who already holds a win over Alvarez — walked away from the fight game following his win over Andre Berto in 2015, but abruptly ended his retirement to face McGregor after months of back-and-forth verbal sparring between the two. But, negotiations have hit a standstill, and with Alvarez vs. Golovkin going down this year, it’s becoming more and more unlikely that Floyd and Conor will mix it up 2017.
