Cub Swanson taking extended break from UFC before returning for possible title shot

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Swanson vs Lobov Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Cub Swanson has long been a fan favorite, but after his previous two bouts including his “Fight of the Year” against Doo Ho Choi at UFC 206 and last nights (Sat., April 22, 2017) “Fight of the Night” against Artem Lobov at UFC Fight Night 108 (see it), Swanson has been can’t miss see TV as of late.

And its a good thing we have the tape to relive some of Cub’s greatest hits, as the top Featherweight contender won’t step foot inside the Octagon anytime soon, as he plans to take a break from fighting.

“I’m definitely going to take some time off, but I’m going to be training the whole time,” Swanson told MMAjunkie. Swanson and girlfriend Kenda Perez are set to welcome their first child together, so you can’t blame Cub for wanting to take some time to enjoy his baby.

“I enjoy training at this point in my career. But realistically, (I won’t return) until late December or early next year,” sad Cub.

After his win in Nashville, Tennessee, Cub stated that he’s ready for a shot at the title and is eying the winner of the upcoming title unification fight between division champion Jose Aldo and interim champ, Max Holloway, which is set to go down this summer at UFC 212.

And while he’s lost to both men and admits the defeats “equally sting,” he’d love to get a do-over against Aldo more-so than Holloway.

“I think it would be a great fight,” he said. “I’ve studied him for a long time. I know what he’s good at; I know what I’m good at,” said Cub. “I know I can make any fight a war and make it my fight. I’m excited to do it again. I took a lot of lessons away from that fight, and some that have molded me into who I am – all my losses, really, but that one in particular. And I’d like to get it back,” concluded Swanson.

Aldo defeated Cub in just eights seconds back in 2009 at WEC 41 via lying knee, so it’s no secret why Swanson wants a chance to avenge that loss. In the meantime, he’ll be training and enjoying his family, hoping that the call to the big dance finally comes after six years with the promotion.
