Al Iaquinta and Diego Sanchez squared up tonight, (Sat., April 22, 2017) at UFC Fight Night 108 live on FOX Sports 1 from inside Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.
“Raging” Al Iaquinta was coming off a long layoff after a contract dispute with the UFC. Prior to that, he had won four straight. Diego Sanchez had won his last fight against Marcin Held.
Sanchez opened with a body kick that John McCarthy thought might have gone low. Iaquinta landed an outside leg kick, then ate a left hook as he threw another. Iaquinta threw a rear to the body and ate a knee. Iaquinta dropped Sanchez with a hard right hand. Sanchez got back up, but Iaquinta kept the pressure up, and folded the veteran Sanchez with another right hand that ended the fight on the spot. John McCarthy stepped in just in time to prevent the follow-up shot. Iaquinta showed his unreal power here, and there will surely be calls for Sanchez to finally hang them up. His legendary career has taken it’s toll on his once-legendary chin.
In the post-fight interview, Al Iaquinta called out the UFC directly, and said the sooner they realize he is the man, the better off they both will be. The crowd, unsure of what to make of this, began to boo a little. Iaquinta, famous for cursing out booing crowds, chuckled. “Okay, yeah. Boo me. Yeah.” He credited his team at Serra-Longo for his striking prowess, and concluded with a plug for his real estate agent services. “If you need a real-estate agent, hit me up!”
Official result: Al Iaquinta def. Diego Sanchez by Knockout at 1:38 of Round One
