The first fight has been added to UFC on FOX 25 on July 22 from inside Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, New York, as hometown power puncher Gian Villante takes on fellow light heavyweight middleman Patrick Cummins. The bout was first reported by Newsday earlier this week.
Cummins, 36, was originally scheduled to fight Villante back at UFC Fight Night 102, but had to pull out of the fight due to staph infection. The former NCAA Division I wrestler won his recent bout with Jan Blachowicz at UFC 210 via majority decision, but he will have to do more this year to shake off a 1-3 UFC record from 2015-2016.
Villante, 31, is coming off a disappointing loss to Mauricio Rua at UFC Fight Night 106. Despite his inability to win back-to-back fights since 2015, Villante has never lost two consecutive Octagon appearances throughout his 10-fight UFC career. A victory over Cummins puts him back on track to test the top 10 in 2017.
UFC on FOX 25 currently has no main event in place, but this featherweight scrap is certainly a possibility. For now, Cummins vs. Villante is the only scheduled bout.
