What’s next for Demetrious Johnson after record-tying performance at UFC on FOX 24?

It’s been a while since we’ve said a champion has cleaned out his or her respective division. But, Demetrious Johnson has just about done that following his dominant submission victory over Wilson Reis at UFC on FOX 24 last night (Sat., April 15, 2017) in Kansas City, Missouri (full video highlights here).

“Mighty Mouse” now joins elite company, standing alongside Anderson Silva for most consecutive title defenses in the history of the promotion with 10 straight.

But, to move ahead of “The Spider,” Johnson will have to go back, in a sense, as a third title fight against Joseph Benavidez seems to be on the horizon. Sure, it may not be too popular among some, but there really isn’t anyone else in the 125-pound weight class who is deserving of a title fight against Johnson. It’s a side effect of a champion running through everybody, having to fight some less than deserving contenders on more than one occasion.

That said, Benavidez is the most deserving -- despite having two losses to Johnson. Winning six in row since his most recent knockout loss to “Mighty Mouse” several years ago, Benavidez has cemented his status as the No. 1 contender. Indeed, with no one else possessing a long enough win streak to argue against him, Benavidez is sitting pretty at the top spot.

For Johnson, one more win over Benavidez not only cements his own status as the pound-for-pound G.O.A.T., but will put him in a class all his own with 11 straight title defenses. In the process, he will set himself up for perhaps his first-ever $1 million payday in a much-desired super fight against the promotion’s Bantamweight title holder, whoever it may be at the time.
